The tree installation (click to view project assets), thematically about love, explores how to become a physical interpretation of love by occupying text and shape within a viewer’s field of vision. Incorporating wire, fabric, embroidery, paint, writings, and an animated projection, the project utilizes Burroughs’ “cut-up method” to combine the words of theorists, artists and writers such as Joni Mitchell, Elizabeth Bishop, Erich Fromm, Bell Hooks. How does the project make the distinction between “I love the tree” versus “the tree is love”? The tree fulfills both, an act of performance in creating the tree simultaneous to the tree taking the metaphorical form of love. Texts scribed directly onto the bark, embroidered them into fabric, or dangled off the branches, result in a new form of storytelling which crosses multiple forms: literary, performance, and visual mediums.

"subway"

Through an autofiction course, I wrote a series of vignettes about the memories of my mother, confronting questions like what it meant to be seven years old in China, observing my mother as a child, fighting bitterly with my grandmother? The generational story revealed the unspoken language barrier between us, and my fear that she may never understand me. Beyond prose, I wanted to convert the story into a visual language. I converted the autofiction vignettes into a multimedia story where I utilize motifs in the story as inked illustrations (click image to view full pdf). Then, I took scans of the illustrations and used digital manipulation to combine prose with image.

Multimedia project utilizes materials from Asian American plays, archival images, and recontextualizes them into text-as-images pieces. The project considers the historical context of acting as a performance to convey a political history, a personal sentiment. How does theater use acting and writing to translate the experiences of Asian Americans? What are limitations to experience?I use this project to evaluate our political age of labels and identities, and where these labels result in "cut outs" to a person when they do not fit into the assumptions presented by these identities.
